PDAS Junior & Coaching Events

 

Our Junior Fun match is taking place on Thursday 20th August at our Tithe Barn fishing Complex (both Tithe bottom & Tithe Middle) and you are invited to book-in.

The event is free (but please see below) and everyone will win one of our assorted and unique certificates (Whether they want one or not)!  There are a few rubbish prizes for the winners and a number of tatty trophies we want to get rid of!

Tackle/bait  (Again no charge!) can be provided for everyone who needs it, and coaches will be on hand to provide help and advice (Although no one-to-one coaching is guaranteed/available as its a weekday and many coaches are at work).  We do require an adult to stay with any children 11 or under and all parents are welcome to help/support their child of any age.

This is very much a fun match, suitable for all abilities and ages (16 or under),  and anyone who has already attended one of our events this year or is already a  PDAS Club Member  (16 or under) is eligible to enter. (Please bring your membership card). All entrants need to book in, via this email only,  by Thursday, 13th August . You will receive a confirmation email if you are successfully booked in.

Whilst this event is free, Portsmouth & District Angling Society run this event, in part, to support a number of local charities and PDAS welcome all donations  to make it worthwhile to continue this junior event in future years. 

Cash donations, both large and small, can be made at the event (there will be a charitable donation box in full sight at the registration desk) or alternatively  should you wish to donate direct,  the club’s bank account, which we use specifically for charitable donations is:-

The match briefing will be at 8.45am and the draw will take place at 9am .  If you want to borrow tackle, we suggest you  arrive by 8.30 latest to get it sorted.

The fishing will be from 9.30 to 12.

Prize giving will start around 12.30

Anglers (friends/family etc) can share swims if they want. Please let me know if this is the case as this will need to be organised in advance.

Other points to note:-

  1. The event is all led by volunteer Angling Trust qualified coaches. Whilst there will be many experienced anglers available to help , this is a match and we cannot offer a one to one coaching session.
  2. We will , on the day, at registration require an emergency contact number to be given.
  3. A portaloo is on site with hand gel.
  4. The club may be taking photos at this event with participants/winners. You will be so advised beforehand. If you don’t want to be included just let us know . You may take photos of your child but please avoid taking photos of others.

Things to bring:-

  1. Suitable footwear (eg trainers, not flipflops!)
  2. Trousers to protect you from nettles, brambles and bugs.
  3. Something warm to wear (as it does get surprisingly cold in the shade)
  4. Caps/hats/sunscreen  as you could be fishing in the sun
  5. A light waterproof (as it could rain). There is a small undercover area to shelter from bad weather should that occur . We have to stop fishing if thunderstorms are about but can continue when they have passed.
  6. Parents should bring their own seats.
  7. Ample hydration and any snacks you want. There are also no bins on site so all rubbish must be taken home
  8. A ready smile!

The Portsmouth and District Angling Society host many Junior and Coaching sessions each season. These are open to all.

All coaching is carried out by Level 2 qualified AT Coaches. Events may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Any date changes or additions will be advertised on the club’s website.

Junior Club (Tithe Barn Bottom Lake)
Participants will all get a chance to develop their skills, whatever their level. The basics of angling and fish care will be covered. All angling methods can be tried.
• Open to anyone up to 16 years old including non-members
• All tackle and bait provided
• All sessions are free (donations to nominated charity appreciated)
Anglers can come at any time in the session and stay for as long as they want. Juveniles (11 and under) must have an adult stay with them during their session. Juniors do not require an adult to stay.

Beginners and Improvers (Tithe Barn Bottom Lake)
These sessions are aimed at improving the knowledge and skills of all anglers.

The coaching team would like to thank everyone who has donated tackle to make these events larger and more varied than ever. We are now able to fill every swim often with more than one angler. Last season events and news……

This year the PDAS ran a 2 hour junior fun match which proved very popular. We were supported by the Angling Trust enabling some great prizes to be given to all the participants. We had 21 youngsters fishing with an age range of 6 to 16. We had a wide range of abilities attend. Some have been fishing a few years, others a few weeks. A couple had only started at our beginners coaching event the day before! Each lake had one of the club’s level 2 trained Angling Trust coaches in charge with lots of club members offering help for free on the day. Entry was also completely free. We did take donations for the clubs nominated local charity raising nearly £100.

The club kindly donated Tithe middle and bottom lakes for the match. It was run under local ‘rules’ which were very fish friendly and nothing like any match you would normally see. The weather was very kind, if not a bit too hot so swims were chosen based on shade. No keepnets were used and we had estimated weights only. Fish were returned as quickly as possible. Family members and friends could share swims if they wanted. Participants even kept their own ‘score’ and were given chance to learn new skills with a range of set ups/baits available for people to try if they wanted. Prizes were available for all sorts of categories including things like numbers of different species and most of a species. There were also prizes for improvers and runners up. This enabled everyone to get a wonderful Guru fishing pack as provided by the Angling Trust. Everyone when away with a Whip, Landing net and unhooking mat/bag. We did an overall winner for each lake based on the number of categories they had won. They were Lyall Snook with 24 fish and 3 species, and Sam Wilkinson 19 fish, 4 species and the biggest fish of that day at about 7lb. Everyone caught something which was wonderful. Hopefully we can repeat the event next year.
