Lakeside is taking a long time to recover from the prymnesium outbreak. There are still signs of the toxic algae on the surface and the dissolved oxygen levels are a long way from normal. Fish mortalities appear to have stopped but we do not know what fish remain. We have conducted surveys with the EA which have been very disappointing. We found no fish in the main areas of the lake. We are planning to conduct further surveys of the lake margins later this month. We will keep the lake closed to fishing whilst the lake parameters remain abnormal however we plan to reopen the lake to fishing soon after the readings are ok. The lake is going to take a long time to recover so anyone fishing may find the bites extremely hard to come by. We are using the time whilst the lake has been closed to work on the water, and we have already improved the parking slots and started replacing swim fronts.
We have been working with the EA on ways we can tackle the underlying problems the lake has. We will be discussing the way forward with Portsmouth City Council. We will be able to provide more details after those discussions.
